Forgiveness of sins was accomplished by Jesus on the cross. Something else was accomplished as well. Through belief in Jesus, and repentance, we have the power to move away from sin toward a lifestyle that pleases God. The Bible is clear about the expectations that come along with truly accepting Jesus as our Savior. Jesus said it this way: "And He said to them all, if any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. (Luke 9:23, KJV)." The Apostle Paul wrote "Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin (Romans 6:6 KJV)." And in Galatians, Paul writes plainly "And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:24 & 25 KJV)."
Does this mean that overnight we will be perfect? No. What it means is we don't make excuses for unbiblical behavior. We look in the spiritual mirror, and see ourselves through the lens of the Bible. When we see something that doesn't line up with God's Word, we admit missing the mark, ask God for forgiveness, and purpose to make the necessary adjustments in our lifestyle. Jesus' sinless life is the example we strive to meet every day...through the power of the cross!
Blessings and peace!
